Annual returns
An annual return is a breakdown of the past year's payroll tax, and is used to confirm or adjust your liability.
At the end of a financial year, you must:
- lodge an annual return for taxable wages paid or payable during the year
- compare the sum of the wages in your periodic returns with your annual wages
- pay any outstanding amounts (called your 'annual liability') by 21 July.
If you have lodged a final return during the year, and you continue to pay taxable wages in the same financial year, you still need to lodge an annual return. We will not take into account any wages paid for the period stated in the final return when working out your annual liability.
Note: If you do not pay taxable wages for the remainder of the financial year, the final return will take the place of the annual return.
You can calculate your annual deductions and liability or refund:
- through OSRconnect (this will be calculated automatically when you lodge online)
or
- by using the annual liability calculator before lodging your annual return.

After you lodge
After you have lodged your annual return, you should calculate your fixed periodic deduction for the next financial year.
Fixed periodic deductions only apply to:
- designated group employers (DGEs)
- non-grouped employers who pay interstate wages.
